Pete The Cat Costume

Pete The Cat book series is an absolute favorite in this household! When at the last minute Noeland asked if he could be Pete for Halloween (up to that point he had been insisting that he wear last year’s donkey costume), I knew it wasn’t going to be an option we could just find in-store!

Noeland talks about Halloween literally all year, so this costume idea wasn’t something he would let me just brush off! So we roamed the aisles of Michaels and Target to see what we could come up with…

We started with Pete’s famous red shoes. Noeland had a pair that were about to hit the trash, so decided to use basic red craft paint and layer on a few coats. They looked great and surprisingly didn’t crack or flake off throughout the night!

As it turns out, finding a solid yellow toddler sized t-shirt in-store is impossible (only when you are looking for one specifically, of course)! So when I ran across the fabric dye in the craft store and knowing we had a white tee at home already, I figured I would just go for it. It was actually really easy, aside from trying to figure out where-in-the-world (literally) to dump the dye afterwards.

For Pete’s Four Groovy Buttons we cut out circles from felt and stitched them on with embroidery floss – easy enough! I also free-handed Pete’s famous “It’s all good.” quote on the back of the shirt, using a fabric marker (only because I didn’t want to spend $20 for iron-on decals).

I found the perfect material for Pete’s tail – an extra large pipe cleaner that I lightly sprayed with blue spray paint. I just loosely wrapped it around his waist and folded his leggings waistband over it to keep it in place (I did a loose twist to secure it around his waist, so it would easily pull apart if he got caught on something).

Added some navy leggings, fleece jacket and mittens/cat stocking hat, drew on a cat nose & whiskers with eyeliner and we were all set! As we hit the streets trick-or-treating on Halloween night, we heard so many families recognize and acknowledge Pete the Cat as he walked by – nailed it!
